Revolutionizing Landscapes: Taki Merges Nature with Innovation

Designer Masaki Takahashi's Taki Project Wins A' Design Award

In the heart of Niseko, Hokkaido, a landscape project named Taki, crafted by Masaki Takahashi, has transformed the natural environment into a breathtaking fusion of art and design, earning the prestigious Bronze A' Landscape Planning and Garden Design Award in 2024.

At the core of Taki lies a profound respect for the natural surroundings and existing architecture. Takahashi's vision was to create a space that not only complements its environment but also enhances it. The project features a staircase made from concrete slabs, mirroring the building's exterior walls, to establish a seamless connection between the structure and the landscape. This innovative design approach has resulted in a harmonious blend of man-made and natural elements.

The centerpiece of Taki is a majestic waterfall, sourced from natural spring water, which serves as a landmark within the landscape. This feature was not part of the original plan but was proposed by the craftsman during construction and enthusiastically adopted. The waterfall, alongside a promenade adorned with a diverse array of seasonal flowers, allows visitors to experience the full splendor of Hokkaido's four seasons.

Concrete, a material synonymous with modern construction, is used ingeniously throughout the project. The steps are deliberately varied in size and placement, creating a dynamic arch that invites exploration. This design choice not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also challenges the conventional use of concrete in landscaping. The juxtaposition of the rugged concrete against the soft stone approach on the back side of the waterfall creates a space that is both striking and inviting.

The Taki project's realization required meticulous planning and craftsmanship. The positioning of the drain pipe, which dictates the creek's flow, and the balance of the concrete table were critical challenges that were successfully overcome. The result is a landscape that not only functions beautifully but also captures the imagination of all who encounter it.

By night, Taki transforms into an enchanting space, with strategic lighting casting a magical glow over the landscape. The continuous flow of the waterfall, which remains unfrozen even in the depths of winter, offers a serene spectacle and a soothing presence to those nearby. It is this attention to detail and the integration of functionality with design that has earned Taki its well-deserved accolades.

The Taki project, spanning five years from conception to completion, stands as a testament to the power of innovative design in enhancing our interaction with nature. It is a celebration of the seasons, a marvel of engineering, and a beacon of design excellence, all woven into the fabric of Niseko's landscape. Masaki Takahashi's Taki is not just a design triumph; it is a sustainable, living art piece that resonates with the essence of its environment.
